Mitchell (1898-1988) was born in Wichita, Kansas and educated at Philomath College (1916-1920), the University of Oregon (1918-1926), and received his master's from the University of Washington (1933). He also attended Stanford University for Ph.D work. He became a teacher, journalist and writer.
